QUEENS — A 13-year-old student was arrested after bringing a loaded gun to an Ozone Park middle school Wednesday morning, according to the NYPD.
The boy brought the .22 caliber firearm with one round in the chamber to M.S. 202 on Lafayette Street at about 11:23 a.m., an NYPD spokesman said.
Another student found out about the weapon and then told the principal, a spokeswoman for the school safety agents’ union said.
The safety agents then confronted the student while he was in class and found the gun in his backpack, the spokeswoman added.
He was detained and then turned over to police.
The student had not yet been charged by 2:30 p.m. and was being questioned in the 106th Precinct, the NYPD spokesman said.
The school does not have metal detectors, according to the union.
The Department of Education said it was working with police.
“The NYPD immediately responded to this troubling incident, and swiftly and safely confiscated the weapon," DOE spokeswoman Toya Holness said in a statement. "Students and staff are safe, and we will work in close partnership with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation.”
