UES Man Pretends to Be NYPD Detective to Get Free Ride on Bus, Police Say

By Shaye Weaver | November 7, 2016 5:13pm

UPPER EAST SIDE — An Upper East Side man pretended to be a police detective to get a free ride on the M86 bus, police said.

Anastasios Papapanagiotou, 44, boarded an M86 SBS bus just before 3 p.m. on Oct. 29 and showed a fake NYPD detective shield to the bus driver, expecting to get away with not paying for the ride, police said.

As he flashed the badge, he said, "on the job," according to authorities.

When an MTA special inspection supervisor asked him for his police ID card, Papapanagiotou told him he was not a police officer and could not produce an ID, police said.

On Oct. 30, he was arraigned on charges of criminal impersonation and pleaded guilty to a downgraded charge of disorderly conduct with a conditional discharge and two days of community service, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.

His attorney declined to comment.

Other notable crimes in this week’s blotter from the 19th Precinct include:

► A 53-year-old man from The Bronx was arrested on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. for a burglary he committed on East 73rd Street at 10 a.m., police said. He used stolen credit cards from the burglary to make purchases at Best Buy, police said. Detectives used surveillance video from other burglaries he allegedly committed and the stores he visited to track him down, police said.

Police could not immediately provide information on the other burglaries he committed.

He was arraigned on burglary charges on Nov. 4 and did not post bail, which was set at $60,000 cash or bond, according to the district attorney's office.

► A 20-something woman tried to shoplift $1,441 in merchandise from Bloomingdale's at 1000 Third Ave., on Nov. 3, at roughly 4:30 p.m., police said. She put the following items in a bag and tried to leave without paying: five bras worth $410; 17 pairs of underwear worth $452; and 11 pieces of jewelry worth $579. Store security caught her on her way out. She was charged with grand larceny, police said.
