MIDTOWN — A thief stole a Bible valued at nearly $1,000 from a Midtown church, the NYPD said.

The man was caught on surveillance camera reaching over the altar inside Saint Thomas Church at 1 W. 53rd St., at Fifth Avenue, around 8:55 a.m. on Oct. 19 and taking the Bible, which was valued at $975, police said.

The thief left the church with the Bible soon after, the NYPD said.

The church employee who reported the theft told police he suspects the perpetrator is a homeless man who frequents the area.

The church’s head verger declined to comment on the theft Tuesday, and its head of security did not immediately respond to request for comment.
