GREENWOOD HEIGHTS — A 19-year-old man who tried to rape a woman as she walked home alone from the subway late on a Saturday night was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Police arrested Sammy Bensabeur of Bath Beach in connection with an attempted sexual assault of a 38-year-old woman. The attack happened about 10:31 p.m. on Oct. 22 as the woman was walking home from the 25th Street R train station.

Police say Bensabeur trailed the woman and helped her off the ground after she tripped on the sidewalk. NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Monday that the suspected would-be rapist at first acted as a good Samaritan but then attacked the woman.

Bensabeur was charged with attempted rape, attempted criminal sex act, sex abuse, forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment, public lewdness, and harassment, police said.
