FINANCIAL DISTRICT —  After several years of sometimes contentious redevelopment discussions, historic Trinity Church has unveiled its plan for a new parish center topped by an office tower.

The 26-story building, at 68-74 Trinity Place, will rise directly behind the iconic 19th century Trinity Church that sits at Wall Street and Broadway, church officials announced Monday.

The first nine floors of the glass tower will be home to staff offices, along with flexible spaces that can be used for gallery shows, performances and youth education classes. The parish center will also house a cafe.

On the second floor, the parish center will connect with a bridge to Trinity Church, across Trinity Place.

Here's a video rendering of the tower, including an inside view of the building:

The center is also slated to include a gymnasium for youth activities, a parish hall that can seat up to 300 people, as well as several outdoor terraces for community events.

The building will have separate entrances and addresses for the parish center and for the commercial office floors above.

The design, from architects Pelli Clarke Pelli, comes after years of overhaul discussions within the parish. A previous plan, also designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, called for the revamped parish center to be topped by a residential condo tower, but that proposal was scrapped.

The new tower is being built on the site of a razed 1920s building that had been home to church offices. Leasing office space above the new center will fund parish and community activities, church officials have said.

“Our building is a statement of Trinity’s dedication to serving the people of this community, this neighborhood and the city of New York for a fourth century," the church's rector, Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, said in a statement.

"Having been in conversation with our neighbors every step of the way, we are creating a dynamic, engaging home for Trinity’s ministry activities. This Parish Center is a reflection of our core values and commitment to hospitality.”
