UPPER EAST SIDE — A 76-year-old woman nearly lost her leg after a dump truck backed into her as she was crossing East 73rd Street, police said.

The woman was crossing at Second Avenue in the crosswalk at about 6:12 p.m. on Oct. 14, when a red dump truck reversed into her, pinning her leg to the ground, according to authorities.

She was rushed to the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition with a partially severed leg, the NYPD said.

The driver stayed on the scene and was not charged. Police could not say whether the dump truck belonged to a private carrier or the city's Department of Sanitation.

Since 2009, there have been 52 traffic-related injuries at the intersection of East 73rd Street and Second Avenue, at least five of which were pedestrians, according to the city's Vision Zero data.

Three injuries took place this year, two of which were pedestrians, the data shows.

Across the neighborhood, pedestrian fatalities have more than doubled in the past few years, according to the Department of Transportation.
