Evicted Tenant Destroys Carpet Before Leaving Gowanus Apartment, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — A 74-year-old woman who was being evicted from her apartment destroyed the carpet and light fixtures before she left Oct. 1, according to a police report.

The landlord told police he didn't want the tenant arrested for damaging the unit, which was on Eighth Street between Third and Fourth avenues, the report stated.

Other recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details coming from police reports:

► A bright green child’s bike from Walmart was stolen from in front of the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza on Oct. 1 about 3 p.m.

► Someone yelled, cursed and spit at a traffic enforcement agent while he was working on 12th Street and Seventh Avenue on Oct. 7 at 1:35 p.m.

► A woman punched a 51-year-old woman in the face while she was sitting and waiting for the bus at Grand Army Plaza on Oct. 7 at 10:15 a.m. The victim, whose left eye swelled shut after the punch, did not know the attacker.

► A 66-year-old woman came home to her apartment on Nevins and Warren streets on Oct. 4 at 7:30 a.m. and found marks on the door indicating that someone had tried to break in.

► A window on a 1997 Subaru Legacy was broken while it was parked on 14th Street near Seventh Avenue on Oct. 1.

► A 2016 Honda had a window smashed Oct. 2 on 13th Street and Seventh Avenue.

► A $250 Shimano bike was stolen Oct. 1 from Fifth Avenue near Carroll Street.

Overall, major crime in the 78th Precinct has dropped 10 percent this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD. There were 653 major crimes reported between Jan. 1 and Oct. 2, 2016, and 722 major crimes during that period in 2015.
