LITTLE ITALY — Nickel & Diner, a modern version of the classic, all-American "five and dime" lunch counters of the past, will open its doors Wednesday morning and start serving up twists on beloved diner favorites.

Eschewing a traditional diner menu of basic burgers, pancakes, and eggs, the new eatery at 1 Howard St. will serve up more upscale dishes inspired by diner culture.

With Chef James Friedberg — previously of West Village eatery Blenheim — at the helm, the upscale diner offers an array of "eclectic" culinary styles, according to restaurant reps.

The breakfast menu boasts a spiced-up Classic Egg Sandwich on a poppy seed Kaiser roll with salsa verde in addition to hickory smoked bacon, country ham and sharp cheddar.

And in lieu of the classic Reuben sandwich, customers can feast on a Pressed Veal Breast Reuben with coleslaw, gruyere cheese and horseradish on marble rye.

The diner, sitting at the cross-section of Little Italy, Chinatown, and SoHo, will gather its ingredients from local vendors, according to the executive chef.

"We’re fortunate to have the ability to source local produce as close as just down the street and we’ve been incredibly inspired by this ever evolving neighborhood," said Freidberg in a press release.

Nickel & Diner will also boast local brews from Nobletree Coffee, based in Red Hook.

The eatery will launch its soft opening Wednesday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
