Woman Struck and Killed Crossing Street on Upper East Side, Police Say

NEW YORK CITY — A woman was struck and killed by a driver on the Upper East Side Friday afternoon, police said.

Blanca Pagan, 73, was walking southbound on York Avenue and East 89th Street when a white 2013 Chevrolet van made a right onto 89th and struck the woman inside the crosswalk, just two blocks from her East 87th Street home, according to police.

She was rushed to New York–Presbyterian Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

The van's driver, Pjerin Gjerji, 48, of Yorktown, Westchester County, remained on the scene, according to the NYPD.

He was arrested, and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, police said.
