MORRISANIA — A man angry with his nephew's friend for squatting in his late mother's apartment is suspected of shooting him in the arm, officials said.

Trevor Carpenter, 34, was upset that his nephew and his nephew's friend were living in his mother's apartment at 973 Rev. James A. Polite Ave. after she had died, but when he confronted them on Sunday around 7 p.m. and told them they should leave, the pair refused to do so, police said.

Carpenter is suspected of then taking out a gun and shooting his nephew's friend in the right arm while they were in front of the building, officials said.

He was charged with attempted murder and assault during his arraignment on Oct. 3, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

But a representative from the DA's office said on Friday that prosecutors had asked for Carpenter's release from jail, as recently obtained evidence from the scene suggests he may not have been the shooter.

The charges against him have not been dropped, however, and the investigation is ongoing, according to the DA's office.
