MIDTOWN — Hurricane Matthew has killed more than 100 and put Florida on high alert, but forecasters are saying New York City can breathe a sigh of relief.
The category 4 storm, which is currently churning over the Bahamas with winds of 140 mph, is expected to hit Florida's coastline on Friday night or Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The hurricane will travel up the Atlantic coastline toward Georgia and the Carolinas on Saturday, but it will then turn eastbound and head out to sea on Sunday morning, National Weather Service projections show.
That prediction would leave New York City unaffected.
Some New Yorkers are still taking no chances. Owners of the Nantucket Lightship, an events boat docked at the Brooklyn Heights piers, decided Wednesday to set sail for calmer waters in New Bedford, Connecticut.

An unrelated cold front will bring rainfall to the region Saturday, forecasts show.
