Possible Human Heart Found in Trash Can, NYPD Says

By Kathleen Culliton | October 6, 2016 4:51pm

MANHATTAN — A man reached into a garbage can to pull out a discarded potted plant and found what police say could be a human heart.

The 67-year-old man found the suspected heart in the trash outside the Riis Houses on FDR Drive and East Sixth Street at 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.

When the man picked up a box containing the plant and looked inside, he saw it also contained the extracted organ, police said.

The find was first reported by the Daily News.

The heart was taken to the Medical Examiner's office to determine if it was human, police said.

The Medical Examiner did immediately respond to request for comment.
