NEW YORK CITY — Donald Trump’s eponymous charity never registered to solicit sizable donations in New York state, according to the New York State Attorney General’s office.
The Donald J. Trump Foundation — Trump’s New York-based nonprofit whose dealings have repeatedly been questioned by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Washington Post — did not complete a mandatory registration to receive donations more than $25,000 and therefore did not submit to yearly audits in New York state, according to the Attorney General’s office.
New York State Executive Law requires that all charities register with the Charities Bureau under Article 7a with exceptions given to government agencies, educational and religious institutions, volunteer emergency responders and charities that solicit less than $25,000 in the state, according to state law.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has the power to stop the Trump Foundation from raising funds if his office finds donations originating in New York State exceed the $25,000 limit, but his office declined to comment on whether they were investigating.
The most recent tax filings from the Trump Foundation in 2014 show that the organization claimed earnings of more than $500,000 but does not specify which states those donations came from.
Neither the Trump campaign nor the foundation responded to a request for comment Friday.
The Clinton Foundation, another New York-based charitable organization headed by a presidential candidate, has been registered under Article 7-a for more than a decade, according to the state's charity database.
