TRIBECA — A small but renowned TriBeCa theater has abruptly shuttered after 25 years on Walker Street.

According to a statement from Soho Rep., which has put on shows since 1991 at 46 Walker St., the theater company has vacated its longtime space after deciding to end its lease.

Soho Rep. said in a statement that while exploring the possibility of buying the theater space, it "learned that the usage authorized by the City when the company first moved into the building 25 years ago does not align with the current operations in the space," and making alterations would be too expensive.

The theater company told the New York Times that it was already planning on staging its next play at a larger East Village theater, but it will have to find a new, permanent space moving forward.

“It’s both a hair-raising and an exhilarating moment,” Sarah Benson, the theater’s artistic director, told the Times. “It’s actually a great opportunity for us to figure out what the evolution of Soho Rep is.”
