INWOOD — A fire broke out inside an apartment building on Academy Street Wednesday afternoon, causing flooding for residents, officials said.

The blaze at 675 Academy St., which was reported shortly before 4 p.m., started on the second floor, fire officials said, after an “electrical malfunction on an extension cord.” Although there was a lot of smoke, said Battalion Chief Paul Miller, there were no injuries or extensive damage to other apartments.

Several fire officials responded to the call, sparking concerns among residents and tenants alike.

“I wasn’t in the building, I was coming in and saw the fire trucks,” said Amanda Sullivan, who has been living in the apartment building with her family for three years. “It’s never happened before, but things happen from time to time… And as far as I know, no one was hurt and that’s the important thing.”
