HUDSON SQUARE — A man was stabbed in the chest Wednesday afternoon on Pier 34, a police source said.

The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m, toward the end of the pier, near where the ventilation systems for the Holland Tunnel are, the source said.

The victim, in his 20s, was transported to Bellevue Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the source said.

Witness Nagal Lingam said he had fallen asleep on a bench on the pier. When he woke up, he saw two men — one with a knife — and a woman, he said.

"They were fighting," Lingam said. "When they saw that I woke up, they ran."

Police were searching for the possible suspects, the source said.

A man, who identified himself as Doug, said he works in the neighborhood and found the victim on the pier, standing up but bleeding.

"I was on my regular walk and saw this man holding his chest, bleeding," said Doug, who added that he helped the man lie down and applied pressure to the man's hand over his chest while they waited for EMS.

"I'm sure they came quickly, but it feels like a lifetime when you wait," he said.

Passersby expressed their shock that someone had been stabbed in broad daylight.

"Wow, I walk this everyday," said one woman named Jane. "It's a great neighborhood."
