HIGHBRIDGE — A scammer claiming to be a fire inspector conned a South Bronx Checkers fast food joint out of more than $600, police said.

The suspect walked into the eatery at 1203 Jerome Ave. around 4:20 p.m. Sept. 6 and said he was a fire inspector, according to the NYPD.

He then conducted a fake inspection of the restaurant and charged it $674 for his work before taking off, police said.

Officers described him as a man wearing a blue T-shirt, blue jeans and a blue baseball hat.

Checkers manager Awa Togola said she was there when the phony inspector showed up and did not suspect that he was a fraud.

“I don’t really work in the daytime,” she said, “so I don’t really know what those people look like.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
