THE BRONX — Police shot a suicidal man who was cutting himself with a knife in the Throggs Neck Houses Wednesday morning, officials said.

Carlos Colon, 25, was clutching his side as he ran past patrolling officers and into 2755 Dewey Ave., near Balcom Avenue, about 1 a.m., according to Larry Nikunen, the NYPD's Bronx Patrol Borough Assistant Chief.

The officers thought Colon was concealing a weapon and gave chase as they called for backup and tried to get him to stop, Nikunen said.

They found Colon on the seventh floor where he was cutting himself while threatening to commit suicide, police said.

Backup arrived and shocked Colon with an electrical device that failed to incapacitate him, officials said.

Colon began approaching the officers with his knife so police shot him once in the upper right thigh, officials said.

The bullet also failed to stop him, so a sergeant shocked him again, finally incapacitating him long enough for officers to take him into custody, police said.

He was treated at Jacobi Medical Center where he's listed in stable condition, police said.
