Man Steals Woman's Phone in West Village, Police Say

By Danielle Tcholakian | September 13, 2016 2:16pm

WEST VILLAGE — A man stole a woman's cellphone while she walked in the West Village with a group of friends, police said.

Police said the 31-year-old man was standing near the 21-year-old victim and her friends at the southeast corner of Christopher and Washington streets about 4:40 a.m. on Sept. 3.

When the woman and her friends walked away, the man grabbed her iPhone and ran, police said.

The woman chased after him, shouting that he had taken her phone, police said.

An officer noticed the chase and stopped the suspect, who had the woman's cellphone in his hand, as well as a baggie of cocaine in his wallet, police said.

He was arrested and charged with petit larceny, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, all misdemeanors.

He was released after his arraignment without bail and is due back in court on Nov. 21. His attorney did not respond to a voicemail seeking comment.
