UPPER WEST SIDE — To celebrate its 100th anniversary this week, a classic Kosher bakery with a new location in the neighborhood will offer loaves of bread for just a buck.

On Friday, Orwashers will sell loaves of its corn rye, an older European variety of the popular bread, for $1 each to the first 100 customers to arrive at its new outpost at 440 Amsterdam Ave. The deal will also will be available at the bakery's original Upper East Side store. Both open at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Loaves of Orwashers' rye typically go for $5.

The new branch, at the corner of West 81st Street, opened on Sept. 1 with 18 indoor and 24 outdoor seats. For the sake of freshness, the new location bakes an array of more than a dozen types of bread on site, said owner Keith Cohen. The breads range from pumpernickel to ciabatta and include a mix of European and New York City favorites, he said.

Along with serving sandwiches and salads for the first time, the new outpost has also jumped on the toast trend. It offers a range of sweet and savory toasts, including one with whipped ricotta, strawberries, mint and sea salt and another with avocado, radishes, sunflower seeds and shoots.

Cohen, who bought the bakery in 2007, described the new Upper West Side location as the "ideal next step" in building his business. The bakery also plans to open an online-ordering system in the near future to ship bread all over the country, he said.

In 1916, a Hungarian immigrant family opened the East 78th Street store, which remains in operation to this day.

Between the two locations, the bakery makes more than 10,000 loaves a day, many of which are sold at city markets like Gourmet Garage, Zabar's and Citerella.
