On the first day of New York Fashion Week, it isn't just the models and fashion bloggers displaying their sense of style.
Many of the nearly 1.1 million New York City students heading back to school Thursday morning had chosen their outfits carefully the night before.
The walk to school was their opportunity to strut down the runway in cat-ear headbands, fedoras, and chic graphic tees, toting book bags and lunch boxes in vivid colors.
For 4-year-old Cece Echevarria, a first-day-of-school outfit wasn't complete without an animal ear headband, which is what wore to her first day of pre-K at P.S. 124.
Both Cece and her 6-year-old sister Josephine — "divas" according to mom Angie Echevarria — had made themselves up with a touch of lipstick and perfume that smelled like cotton candy, their mother said.
There weren't the only kids making a fashionable impression in the schoolyard and hallways Thursday.

Wolfgang, 4
Wolfgang, 4, who looks too cool for school while going into Kindergarten at P.S. 705 in Crown Heights, was excited about his new backpack, decorated with one of his favorite toys, LEGOS, and a nifty cup-holder that he likes.
Safina, 5, and Slyvie, 3
Safina, 5, and Slyvie, 3, headed to the first day of school at P.S. 78 in Long Island City wearing cat ears.
Maalia Noel
First grader Maalia Noel not only wore cat ears for for the first day of school at P.S. 198. on the Upper East Side — she also donned some cheetah-print pants to complement her feline headgear.

Jasper Burger donned a fedora, navy blue vest, Nantucket red shorts and a button-up shirt for his first day of kindergarten at P.S. 198.

Scarlett Rodriguez, 9, was looking sharp on her first day of 4th grade with a crown headband and a tutu skirt.
Isaiah, 5
Isaiah, 5, who is going into Kindergarten at P.S. 705 in Crown Heights, chose to wear this "Pump Up the Volume" T-shirt to show how excited he is for the upcoming school year.
Angel Negron, 8
Angel Negron's mom helped him pick out his outfit on the first day of school at P.S. 274 in Bushwick. His favorite color is blue, as are his favorite Pokémon, he said.
Nataly and Neydin Martinez, 5
Nataly and Neydin Martinez, 5-year-old twins, arrived in matching outfits for the first day of kindergarten at P.S. 124 on 14th Street and Fourth Avenue in Park Slope. Their mom, Omayra, chose the T-shirts because they say "Hello Love" and she thought the phrase was a friendly greeting for the first day.
"They just went with it because of the pretty colors," she said.
Dominic Baugh, 3
Three-year-old Dominic Baugh, starting pre-K at P.S.359 in the South Bronx Thursday, brought along a SpongeBob SquarePants lunch box with him for the first day.
Sofia Tirado-Ortiz, 17
Sofia Tirado-Ortiz, 17, wore a memento mori t-shirt to her first day of class as a senior at Hudson High School of Learning Technologies on West 18th Street.
Biyanna Vicuna, 4
Biyanna Vicuna, 4, was ready for her first day of pre-K at newly-installed trailers at PS 28 in Corona. She wore fresh Jordans for the new school year.
Mila, 10
Mila, 10, and her mom Milanee Kapadia wanted the outfit she wore on her first day of fifth grade at P.S. 87 on the Upper West Side to make a splash.
"I wanted her to wear a tie-dye hot pink dress," Kapadia said.
Mila had other ideas: she chose a bright T-shirt and black leggings.
"I really liked the sparkles!" said the 10-year-old of her top.
