GOWANUS — A longtime Fourth Avenue diner has closed after 35 years in business.
Station Diner, next to the R train stop on Union Street, closed in mid-August and its owner plans to retire, according to a sign in the window.
The reliable greasy spoon was a go-to spot for a quick no-frills breakfast or, as one Yelp reviewer put it, "Disco fries with gravy after a night of head banging metal" at nearby bar Lucky 13.
A Mediterranean restaurant has leased the space from diner owner Stavros Kouimanis, who also owns the building, the Commercial Observer reported.
"It's my time. I feel I'm ready," Kouimanis told the Commercial Observer.
The Mediterranean eatery is slated to open later this year and will take up 1,100 square feet of the building's ground floor, according to the Commercial Observer.
Earlier this year, representatives of restaurant operator Luzzo's Group, which owns Luzzo's on the Lower East Side, submitted a liquor license application to Community Board 6, but those plans apparently did not move forward.
