BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Regulars of Bed-Stuy’s Brunswick Cafe can still expect the same service and menu but may notice one big change — the name.

Australian-style coffee shop Brunswick, located at 144 Decatur St. and Marcus Garvey Boulevard, switched owners in August and is now known as Sumner Cafe.

Ricci Leonce, who took over the business from Alexander Hall, named the shop after the avenue's former designation before it became Marcus Garvey Boulevard.

“It’s a great name for the space, bringing back a sense of what the area was before,” said Leonce, 50, who grew up in the neighborhood.

Leonce purchased the store from Hall, who sold his five cafes throughout the city after a decision to move his family to Des Moines, Iowa.

Another Brunswick location in Windsor Terrace and Prospect Heights’ Milk Bar were picked up by a separate buyer who decided to keep the Brunswick brand, Hall said.

Bed-Stuy’s Sumner Cafe will maintain Brunswick’s table service, staff and “high-quality food and beverages,” Hall said, and continue to serve Counter Culture coffee, pastries from Balthazar Bakery and brunch selections including an avocado toast.

While the sign out front may be different, Leonce added that they won’t “change a thing.”

“If it’s not broken, why fix it?” he said.
