EAST WILLIAMSBURG — A cyclist was fighting for his life after he crashed into an open car door and was thrown into the street where he was struck by a passing car, police said.
The unidentified 33-year-old, who had been biking north on Graham Avenue near Scholes Street on Saturday around 12:15 p.m., was rushed to Woodhull Hospital in critical condition following the collision, officials said.
He suffered severe wounds to his torso and pelvis, police said.
Both drivers remained at the scene, though neither has been charged, police said.
So far this year, 15 cyclists have been killed by drivers across the city and 2,410 have been injured, according to Vision Zero statistics. This year's death count is already more than the total number of cyclists killed last year, when 14 cyclists died across the city.
Two of the bikers that died in recent months were killed just a few blocks from the scene of the latest crash.
Just three blocks north, near the intersection of Graham Avenue and Grand Street, Matthew Von Ohlen, 35, was killed in a hit and run in early July. The driver in that incident has still not been arrested nearly two months after the fatal crash, though police said they found the Camaro that struck him.
In June, Leah Sylvain, 27, was fatally struck in Bushwick by an off-route truck driver who was arrested and charged with failure to yield.
