EAST VILLAGE — An 81-year-old man died after being struck by an ambulance Monday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

The FDNY ambulance struck Gen Zhan of Kips Bay near the intersection of 14th Street and Second Avenue at about 2:20 p.m., police said. The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries, the NYPD said.

A preliminary investigation found that a 22-year-old man was driving the ambulance southbound on Second Avenue when he turned left onto 14th Street and struck Zhan who was walking northbound in the crosswalk, according to police.

Traffic was blocked on 14th Street east of Second Avenue after the collision. Lanes were opened up at about 5:20 p.m.

The driver remained on the scene after the crash and the investigation was ongoing as of Monday night, police said.

FDNY officials declined to comment further Tuesday morning, saying the investigation is ongoing.
