VIDEO: Minivan Running Red Light Hits 6-Year-Old Boy And Drives Away

By Kathleen Culliton | August 25, 2016 3:37pm

BOROUGH PARK — A 6-year-old boy was hit by a black minivan that ran a red light at a Brooklyn intersection Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The boy, who was accompanied by a man and another child, was crossing Fort Hamilton Parkway at 41st Street at 4:15 p.m. when a black Toyota Sienna sped across the intersection and struck the little boy, police said.

Surveillance videos showed that the man and two children had waited minutes for the light to change before crossing and made it less than halfway across the street when the boy turned back to pick up something he had dropped.

The minivan sped over the crosswalk and rammed into the little boy, who was moved several feet by the impact, the video shows.

After the man scooped up the little boy and carried him to a nearby street corner, the minivan driver stepped out of the car, examined his bumpers, then drove off down Fort Hamilton Parkway.

“I'm pissed off that the guy didn't stop," said Britt Argueta, 40, as she watched the driver on footage taken at her store, Eben-Ezer Winner Wireless Video.

“You know you hit someone.”

Tony Gaspar, 28, an employee at Plus Deli and Grocery on Fort Hamilton Parkway who saw the accident, said the driver watched the man carry the bleeding child across the street.

"He got out of the car, saw the father pick up the kid, then he left," Gaspar said.

The boy was bleeding from the head and below the ribs, Gaspar said. "His dad was screaming, 'Help! Help! Call 911!’"

Dorothy Zarzecki, 50, the owner of the day care center Bolek and Lolek on Fort Hamilton Parkway, rushed onto the street to see if she could help. She saw the child on the sidewalk and the man at his side.

“He was on his knees, trying to calm down the little one," said Zarzecki, who could hear the boy’s cries. “All I feel was scared.”

The 6-year-old boy was taken to Maimonides Hospital with a dislocated hip and was in stable condition as of 2 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Police have yet to apprehend the driver but the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
