BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Back-to-school prep kicks into high gear this weekend in Bedford-Stuyvesant with a giveaway of free school supplies and a day of family fun.
Community development organization Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation hosts another edition of “Bed-Stuy Bikes!” on Sunday at Marcy Playground, just in time for the start of the school year.
Fidelis Care will be on hand to give out free backpacks and school supplies to children on a first-come, first-serve basis, and families can participate in sports and outdoor games, including bike safety classes and tennis lessons.
Riders can also stop by for a 3-kilometer and 10-kilometer bike tour. Participants can either bring their own wheels or borrow a free Citi Bike.
The event is the third installment of Restoration’s “Bed-Stuy Bikes” initiative, which looks to help local residents improve their health and get involved in bike sharing.
“We’re working on this effort to increase equity in the bike share system. What we really aspire to do is have more people of color and low incomes see bike share as a vehicle for themselves,” said Tracey Capers, executive vice president for programs at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.
“This event is really about fostering a healthy community.”
Other activities include face painting, arts and crafts, and cooking demonstrations.
Neighborhood organizations will be on hand to offer information about job programs, counseling, and financial assistance, Capers added.
The “Bed-Stuy Bikes! Back to School” event takes place on Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marcy Playground, 753 Myrtle Avenue. For more information, visit the Restoration website here.
