BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Your morning commute just got a whole lot tastier.

Jalapa Jar, the folks behind the Austin-style salsa and breakfast tacos sold at Smorgasburg, opened its first permanent taco stand Tuesday at the Clark Street 2/3 subway station below the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn Heights.

Cousins Steve Smith, 35, and Tommy Byrnes, 34, who co-founded the business a year ago with a friend from Austin, Texas, and another cousin, said the stand gives commuters another quick A.M. option aside from the standard breakfast sandwich.

“For ‘Texplants,’ breakfast tacos are hard to find outside of Texas, and for New Yorkers it’s an alternative to the bacon, egg, and cheese,” Smith said.

The cousins, who are also roommates, said they live around the corner from the subway station and passed by a “For Rent” sign inside the above-ground station for eight months before deciding to open the stand.

They said the location made sense, not just because it was so close to home, but because of its proximity to the hotel and the train.

“We’re literally jamming this into people’s commutes,” Smith said.

Hungry commuters can pick from the menu’s four breakfast tacos, which all include scrambled eggs and can be served as taco bowls.

Meat-eaters can feast on “The Heights” (crumbled bacon, jalapeno garlic mashed potatoes and shredded cheese) or the “Dirty 6th” (ground chorizo, refried pinto beans and queso fresco).

Jalapa Jar also offers vegetarian options like the “Greenpoint Veggie” (sliced avocado, refried black beans and queso fresco) and the “Butler Park Veggie” (sautéed spinach and feta cheese).

Tacos come on either flour or corn tortillas and are topped with chopped cilantro, diced jalapenos and salsa that comes in hot, medium or mild.

Single tacos cost $4 each, while two go for $7.

Customers can also create their own tacos or bowls with fillings like plantain mash, shredded steak, crushed corn tortilla chips, guacamole and Texas queso.

Other menu items include the Borough Pie, Jalapa Jar’s version of a Frito Pie; a chickpea and spinach salad with salsa dressing and tortilla chips; and the Sweet Stix, a fried tortilla filled with spicy mashed plantains and covered in maple syrup and sugar.

The stand serves hot- and cold-brewed coffee from Summer Moon, a coffee shop in Austin known for its wood-fired beans.

Jalapa Jar salsa is also available for $10 a jar in Original Blend (mild), Brooklyn Blend (medium) or Austin Blend (hot).

The stand is open at the Clark Street station Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Smith and Byrnes said they hope to eventually expand the hours, and possibly keep the stand open 24/7.
