QUEENS — A would-be robber tried to steal a transgender woman’s purse, then hit her on the back of the head with a hammer and told her she deserved to be attacked because she was gay, officials said.

The unidentified assailant jumped out of a gray Toyota 4Runner on 67th Street near 41st Avenue in Woodside around 6 a.m. on Wednesday and tried to grab the 28-year-old woman’s purse, police said.

The man then struck the woman on the back of the head and told his victim he hit her because she was gay, sources said.

He returned to his car without the purse and fled southbound on 66th Street, according to police.

The woman was transported to Elmhurst hospital where she was treated and later released for a laceration, bleeding and substantial pain to the back of the head, said police.

The attack is being investigated by the NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force, police said.

Video surveillance caught the suspect wearing a white T-shirt and gray pants as he walked into the street.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
