GRAVESEND — A German Shepherd struggling to stay afloat in Gravesend Bay was saved Friday by the NYPD's Scuba Unit, according to police.

Officers responded to a 911 call at about 6:30 a.m. regarding a dog paddling in the water.

Chase, a family pet who had gotten loose, was in great condition, but he was initially hostile to his rescuers, the NYPD said.

He snarled at them until he had a quick bathroom break and some water. Soon after, officers reunited the 1-and-half-year-old pup with owner Francisco Vasquez at the NYPD's Harbor Charlie in Gravesend.

“I’m so happy,” Vasquez told the New York Daily News.

Chase escaped from him near Cropsey and Neptune Avenues Thursday, Vasquez told the paper. His disappearance sparked a seven-hour doggy hunt by Vasquez, who said Chase has been with his family for the last 15 months.

Apparently, Chase is fond of taking unplanned swims.

“The last time we took him on vacation the same thing happened," Vasquez told the News. "We were in a cabin in Pennsylvania and he jumped from the deck and went into the lake.”

The initial post for Chase on the Lost and Found Pets in Brooklyn Facebook page has updated its status to "REUNITED!" after news of the rescue broke.
