WILLIAMSBURG — A woman leaving a bank with an envelope full of cash was preyed upon by three pickpockets who distracted her by insisting they clean her hat, while one of them slipped the cash from her purse, police said.

"Your hat is dirty," the three thieves told the 58-year-old victim at the intersection of South 9th Street and Roebling Street on Aug. 8 at 1:30 p.m., two blocks away from the Bank of America on Broadway where the woman had just collected an envelope of $2,500 cash, according to police.

The pickpockets insisted on helping the woman clean her hat, police said. One of the thieves was a woman, though police didn't have details on the gender of the other two.

As soon as they left the scene, the woman checked her purse and found that her cash was gone, police said.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday, though the investigation is ongoing.
