The mercury may be dropping after the record-breaking heat emergency that New Yorkers suffered through over the weekend, but get ready for the perpetual stickiness to continue as the humidity continues to rise — bringing thunderstorms Tuesday.

While the high for Tuesday is set to reach 88 degrees, humidity levels could climb to 89 percent, making the heat index — what your body actually feels — about 104 degrees on the sixth day of the heat wave.

“Even though the worst of the heat wave is over, we are still experiencing extreme temperatures that can be dangerous, especially to vulnerable populations,” said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory to be in effect from noon until 10 p.m. Tuesday night. New York City cooling centers, such as libraries, community centers and NYCHA facilities, will remain open for the day.

And people might want to take advantage of those centers not just to cool off, but also to take cover from the scattered thunderstorms scheduled to hit the city from the late morning, through the afternoon and into the night.

After the storms, there will be a break in the high humidity and temperatures.

So New Yorkers only have to push through one more day of extreme heat, which should be possible since they have already survived the flying roaches, power outages and steamy subways.
