NEW SPRINGVILLE — Fireworks were set off in the Staten Island Mall over the weekend, causing a panic and the shopping center to be evacuated, police and reports said.

The suspects detonated the fireworks in the food court of the 2655 Richmond Ave. center on Saturday just after 5 p.m., causing shoppers to panic and run from the mall, the NYPD said.

The fireworks caused reports of a shooter inside the mall, which led to an evacuation and a large response from the FDNY and NYPD, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Numerous shoppers received minor injuries in the chaos, police said.

Police are looking for two people caught on surveillance video approaching the food court right before the fireworks were set off.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
