TREMONT — A man was shot in the neck and critically wounded and a bystander was shot in the leg when a gunman opened fire in The Bronx on Tuesday night, police said.

The suspect, who fled the scene, took aim at a 21-year-old man near Fairmount Place and Marmion Avenue about 9 p.m., striking him in the neck, an NYPD spokesman said. In the shooting, the gunman also hit a woman in the left leg who was not believed to be his intended target and did not know to the victim, police said.

"I heard two shots, 'Pop! Pop!' Then there was a couple-second pause , then I heard two more, 'Pop! Pop!'" said Elliot Howell, 47, who lives nearby.

"Then I heard a female screaming. It was high-pitched. You could tell she was trying to run because the scream was fading," Howell added.

Howell went outside to see the wounded man lying down, he said.

"I saw the guy on the ground. He was on his right side. He had on a button-down dress shirt and shorts. He wasn't moving," Howell added.

The man was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition, the spokesman said Wednesday. The woman was listed in stable condition at the same hospital, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the shooting.

There were no immediate arrests, police said.
