Man Shot and Wounded on Lower East Side Street, Police Say

By  William Mathis and Aidan Gardiner | August 9, 2016 10:07am

LOWER EAST SIDE — A man was wounded when a gunman drove up beside him on the Lower East Side and shot him in the leg before fleeing early Tuesday morning, police said.

The victim, whose name and age weren't immediately released, was standing near Essex and Stanton streets about 3:30 a.m. when a red car drove up alongside him, an NYPD spokesman said.

He was arguing with one of the men inside, who then got out to fight, the spokesman said.

The gunman then shot him in the leg, before getting back into the car and fleeing the scene, police said. There were no immediate arrests.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was treated at Bellevue Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition, an FDNY spokesman said.

It wasn't clear what sparked the initial dispute.
