City to Continue Dropping Larvicide to Prevent Spread of Zika and West Nile

NEW YORK CITY — The city's health agency will spray for mosquito eggs in non-residential areas next week after cases of domestic mosquito-borne Zika virus were found in Miami, and a baby with Zika-related birth defects was born in New York City.

The New York City Department of Health expects to drop larvicide pellets from a low-flying helicopter on Monday, Aug. 8 to Wednesday, Aug. 10 between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the outer boroughs to kill mosquitoes that might carry Zika or West Nile Virus.

The Bronx:

• Marine Park

Queens:

• Alley Pond Park

• Brookville Park

• College Point

• Edgemere

• Kissena Park

• Linden Hill

• Somerville

Staten Island:

• Arlington

• Bloomfield

• Chelsea

• Fresh Kills

• Travis

The health agency also sprayed a pesticide to kill adult mosquitos in The Bronx, Queens and Staten Island on Thursday. 

The city expanded its campaign against mosquitoes in April with a three-year, $21 million Zika action plan. And the state government announced on Tuesday that it will drop larvicide in the subways.
