NEW YORK CITY — Don't let this opportunity go to waste.
The Department of Sanitation announced a series of SAFE disposal events across the five boroughs later this summer and into the fall for dangerous items like asbestos, car batteries and mercury-containing devices they may have lying around the house that cannot be safely disposed of by curbside trash collection.
“These events provide a safe and convenient option for New Yorkers to dispose of their old computers and TVs, as well as other harmful household products, like household chemicals, paints and medications,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.
During the last round of SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics) disposal events, the Sanitation Department said 14,000 residents dropped off 1.3 million pounds of waste.
The agency encourages residents who are unable to attend these events to visit their website or contact 311 for year-round options to dispose of items such as automotive products, batteries, cell phones, electronics, fluorescent lamps, latex paint, mercury devices, and syringes.
