CARNEGIE HILL — A landmarked co-op building overlooking Central Park will be getting a new penthouse addition after getting approval this week from the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The northernmost penthouse at 1150 Fifth Ave., at East 96th Street, will be getting a two-story add-on to make room for two new bedrooms and two new bathrooms, plans show.

Another penthouse exists at the location to the south, but that penthouse will remain the same.

The addition will be barely noticeable from street level, according to the plans.

1150 Fifth Ave.

This is the second building on Fifth Avenue designed by renowned architect J.E.R Carpenter to get approval for a rooftop addition this year. In May, the owner of 1143 Fifth Ave., located a block south, was given approval for a one-story penthouse after months of back and forth with neighbors who opposed it.

"It's small in terms of impact," Elizabeth Fagen, the director of preservation at the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, said about the recent proposal. "But it should not be a precedent for other people."

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the plans on Tuesday.

1150 Fifth Ave. was built for the Lion Brewery of New York City in 1923 to 1924, according to its landmark designation.

The building's penthouse nearest to 96th Street sold for $7.2 million, according to Corcoran, a broker for the sale.

A representative of the owners of 1150 Fifth Ave. did not immediately return a call for comment on Wednesday.
