Score Cheap Tickets and Soak Up a Little Culture Around NYC

NEW YORK CITY — If you've been putting off going to some of the city's famous cultural institutions because of the cost, you're in luck.

There are plenty of ways to avoid paying full ticket prices at places like the Metropolitan Opera or Carnegie Hall — especially if you've got a valid student ID.

Here's a look at just a few ways you can save and still soak up some culture around the city:

Metropolitan Opera

Cost: $25
How many: Up to two tickets for one performance every seven days
Availability: Noon for Monday-to-Friday performances; four hours before curtain for matinees; 2 p.m. for Saturday evening performances
Where: Online

The Metropolitan Opera offers rush tickets for $25 Monday through Sunday online. The tickets, which are for prime seating locations like the orchestra section, are available first-come, first served.

To apply for tickets, you must create an account and log in to the Met’s rush ticket page.

New York Philharmonic

Cost: $18
How many: Up to two tickets per performance
Availability: Up to 10 days before a performance and the day of
Where: Online or at the David Geffen Hall Box Office on the day of a performance

The New York Philharmonic offers students with a valid ID rush tickets, subject to availability. Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and are not available for the Orchestra 1, First Tier Center and First Tier Front Boxes sections.

Tickets are available in person at the box office or online by entering promo code "RUSH" in your shopping cart before checkout.

Interested students can sign up for the student rush email list to know when tickets become available.

New York City Ballet

Cost: $30
How many: Up to two tickets
Availability: Day of
Where: The box office at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center

The New York City Ballet offers dance lovers under the age of 30 a break at the box office with rush tickets.

The ballet posts availability for the week’s performances on Mondays as part of its $30 for 30 program (but note that rush tickets are not available to George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”). You can check online and then purchase tickets the day of at the box office window. Seat locations range from the Orchestra section to the Fourth Ring.

You must bring a valid ID with proof of age to purchase tickets.

The NYCB has fall, winter and spring seasons. You can see a full schedule of performances here.

American Ballet Theater

Cost: $29 Orchestra seats; $11 Family Circle seats
Availability: Day of
Where: Metropolitan Opera House Box Office at Lincoln Center

New York City’s other internationally renowned ballet company, the American Ballet Theater, offers student rush tickets to elementary, high school and college students 25 years and younger (a valid ID is required).

Tickets can be purchased on the day of the performance when available.

ABT’s 2017 season will be announced in the fall.

Carnegie Hall

Cost: $10 student rush; $10 general rush; $20 Carnegie Hall Notables
How many: Up to two tickets for student rush; general rush tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; Notables members can buy a variable number of tickets
Availability: Student rush tickets are announced at @chstudenttix on Twitter, general rush tickets are available at the box office on the day of a performance, and Notables concerts are announced via the Notables Picks email at the start of every month
Where: Online for student rush; Carnegie Hall Box Office for general rush; Online for Notables

Carnegie Hall offers a few different options for concert-goers looking for a deal.

For $10 each, students can get up to two rush tickets to select performances. Follow the concert hall’s Twitter account for up-to-date information about which concerts are available.

The general public can also get $10 deals when Carnegie Hall releases a limited number of general rush tickets at the box office. The box office operates Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Check for additional summer hours here.

Carnegie Hall offers deeply discounted tickets as part of its Notables program. Music enthusiasts in their 20s and 30s can sign up for membership and get access to eligible concerts on a monthly basis. They then get a promo code to use at checkout when selecting their tickets. An additional membership fee is required and starts at $20 per year.

Brooklyn Academy of Music

Cost: $10 for shows with a $2 facility fee per ticket; $10 for movies; $13 for 3D movies
How many: Up to two tickets
Availability: 90 minutes before performances
Where: Various BAM box offices

The Brooklyn Academy of Music offers students the chance to see a wide-range of cultural events for $10.

Full- and part-time students under the age of 29 can buy up to two tickets to any live performance that has available seating. You must bring your valid student ID to the box office 90 minutes before any performance. If the show has limited tickets, you may have to join a standby line.

Students can also get $10 movie tickets to screenings with available seats Monday through Thursday, excluding holidays. Screenings of 3-D movies are $13.
