Suspect Tried to Rape Woman in Staten Island Church Bathroom, Police Say

PORT RICHMOND — Police are looking for a man who tried to rape a woman inside a Staten Island church bathroom.

Asuncion Moran Barrera, 42, is suspected of approaching a 21-year-old woman inside a downstairs gymnasium bathroom at Our Lady of Mount Carmel–St. Benedicta School at 285 Clove Rd. around 12:15 a.m. on July 24, police said.

Once inside, Barrera grabbed the woman by the throat and pushed her down while unbuckling his pants, police said.

The woman was able to escape the bathroom, and fended off a second attempt at keeping her downstairs, according to police.

Barrera is about 4 feet 9 inches tall and about 150 pounds, with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair, police said.
