THE BRONX — A gun buyback program planned for early August will give Bronxites the opportunity to get money for their firearms — no questions asked, police said.

The program is set to take place on Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Evangelical Garifuna Church on 344 Brook Ave. and at the Fellowship Tabernacle Church of God in Christ on 1234B E. Gun Hill Rd., according to the NYPD and the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

"Every week, it seems our country sees examples of extraordinary damage inflicted upon families and sometimes entire communities," said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. "We must act to remove illegal guns from our communities."

Residents will receive a $200 pre-paid card for operable assault rifles and handguns and a $25 pre-paid card for operable shotguns, rifles and air guns.

Guns have to be brought to the drop-off site in a paper or plastic bag or box, and they must be kept in the trunk of a car when being driven to the site.

Bronxites can turn in as many guns as they would like, but they will only receive money for the first three, police said.

Licensed gun dealers and current or retired law enforcement officers cannot take part in the program.

"Whether we prevent suicide, whether we prevent crime, whether we prevent an accidental shooting, each one of these weapons removed from a home is a potential plus," said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.
