MIDTOWN — City cooling centers will remain open through Monday, with daytime temperatures expected to soar into the 90s, according to officials.

A heat advisory was issued for the weekend, as well as an air quality alert and strong thunderstorm watch for Friday evening, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

“In addition to the hot weather we are experiencing, thunderstorms are expected this evening that could create dangerous travel conditions,” said OEM Commissioner Joseph Esposito in a statement. “New Yorkers should stay indoors during severe weather and stay in a place with air conditioning to beat the heat over the next few days.”

Storms could bring 60 mph gusts and up to half an inch of rain.

New Yorkers are advised to stay away from tall, isolated trees and open areas like fields or parking lots.

The air quality alert was in effect through 11 p.m.

People were advised to limit outdoor exercising and those with respiratory disease and young children should also avoid strenuous activities outside.

If you’re looking to beat the heat during the weekend you can find a cooling center by calling 311 or at www.nyc.gov/beattheheat.
