'Diversity Committee' To Tackle Segregation in Manhattan Middle Schools

CHELSEA — The community education council for Manhattan's largest school district is starting a "diversity committee" to "develop ways to create diverse middle schools in District 2."

Community Education Council District 2 has been pushing for a diverse student body at the new middle school coming to 75 Morton St. in the West Village.

Those efforts have given rise to several public meetings and discussions about diversity in city schools.

The first meeting of the CECD2 Diversity Committee is set to take place on Tuesday, July 19, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the seventh floor conference room at District 2's offices at 333 Seventh Ave.

The committee plans to discuss background on the CEC's work so far, the committee's goals and future meeting dates.

The meeting is open to parents, teachers, administrators and any other members of Manhattan's School District 2, the borough's largest, which encompasses Battery Park to 59th Street on the west side and 96th Street on the east side.

Questions can be directed via email to CECD2's chair, Shino Tanikawa.
