NEW YORK CITY — City officials advised New Yorkers to stay cool ahead of hot temperatures expected Friday.
The city's Office of Emergency Management and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released a statement Thursday evening, advising residents to use air conditioning, stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity at the start of the weekend.
The city also plans to keep cooling centers open throughout the five boroughs Friday, starting at 9 a.m., officials said. To find the closest one, New Yorkers can call 311 or click here.
The warning comes alongside a heat advisory from the National Weather Service, which will be in effect from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. Friday.
The Office of Emergency Management also advised locals to check on neighbors and relatives — especially the elderly, the very young and those with pre-existing medical conditions — who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Officials also advised New Yorkers to keep their pets safe by keeping them hydrated and keeping dogs away from hot asphalt.
