CLAREMONT — A Bronx mugging last Christmas has turned into a homicide after the victim passed away from his injuries, police said.

Gilberto Silva, 76, was found unconscious with a deep cut along the back of his head on Dec. 23 across from 1806 Vyse Ave. around 4:40 a.m., according to the NYPD.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and passed away from his injuries on Feb. 5, and his death was ruled a homicide on June 10, according to police and the Medical Examiner's office.

The reason for the delayed notification about Silva's death being ruled a homicide was unclear.

Two male suspects were seen standing over Silva while he was unconscious, while a third was seen walking with his jacket, police said.

Surveillance video shows two of the men walking together about five minutes before the attack in front of 1710 Vyse Ave. and the third man in front of 1796 Vyse Ave. with the victim’s jacket, police said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. All calls are kept strictly confidential.
