MANHATTAN — A man lying across the tracks was fatally struck by a Bronx-bound 1 train early Friday morning in Washington Heights, police said.

The 51-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was on the tracks in the 168th Street station, near Broadway, about 1 a.m. when the operator of the oncoming train hit the brakes, an NYPD spokesman said.

The train didn't stop in time and hit the man, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It wasn't immediately clear why the man was lying on the track but he didn't appear to be the victim of a crime, an NYPD spokesman said.
