Rep. John Lewis To Speak With Artist at Whitney Museum

MEATPACKING DISTRICT — The congressman who led a sit-in for gun control on the House floor last month will speak with an artist at the Whitney Museum on July 15.

Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia with a lengthy history of fighting for civil rights, will speak with artist Danny Lyon, whose photography is currently being showcased at the Gansevoort Street museum.

"Danny Lyon: Message to the Future" features approximately 175 photos, films and related socially and politically-charged pieces by one of the leading artists in 1960s American street photography.

Lyon and Lewis will speak about the the congressman's civil liberties advocacy and his work on gun control and voting rights. The two have known one another since the 1960s, when Lewis was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Lyon was a lead photographer of the civil rights movement in the South and on staff at SNCC.

Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $12 for members, students and seniors.

Rep. John Lewis in Conversation with Danny Lyon will take place on Friday, July 15, 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the third floor theater at the Whitney Museum at 99 Gansevoort St. in the Meatpacking District.
