VIDEO: NYPD Officer Climbs on Manhattan Bridge Railing to Save Suicidal Man

By  Chris Sommerfeldt and Ben Fractenberg | July 6, 2016 1:45pm

MANHATTAN — An NYPD Emergency Service Unit officer clambered along the outside of a safety fence on the Manhattan Bridge more than 100 feet over the East River to rescue a suicidal man who had been threatening to jump for 30 minutes, according to the NYPD and video of the rescue.

The dramatic 45-second video depicts a 22-year-old man whose name was not released wearing red pants holding onto the fence with both hands as several members of NYPD’s elite unit surround him.

At one point the man turns around and lowers part of his body over the ledge.

Officers finally cut a hole in the fence while continuing to talk to the young man.

One officer then climbs over the fence, makes his way over to the man and tackles him into the safe hands of assisting officers positioned inside the walkway.

The man was uninjured and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
