CARROLL GARDENS — A fast-service eatery that focuses on authentic Venezuelan arepas is opening on Smith Street this year.

White Maize will take over part of Ravioli Wine Bar's space at 277 Smith St. near Degraw Street in Carroll Gardens.

The eatery will serve a selection of traditional arepas for under $10 as well as beer and wine, Shun Sim, one of the restaurant's partners, said. It is estimated to open in the next two to three months, he said.

"The Venezuelan [arepa] feels more crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside," he said.

The arepas will be prepared with a range of fillings, including "Pabellon," which consists of shredded beef, plantains and black beans and "Reina," a salad with avocado and chicken.

Sim, a computer software engineer of Chinese descent from Venezuela, said White Maize will be operated by three other partners, two of whom run restaurants in Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Patrons can line up to pick up their arepas to-go or remain at the eatery, which will likely seat between 20 to 30 people.
