NEW SPRINGVILLE — An 84-year-old man is in critical condition after jumping from the second floor of the Staten Island Mall Tuesday morning, officials said.

The man grabbed a chair from a nearby eatery, climbed onto it and jumped over a railing at about 11:19 a.m., witnesses and police said.

"I just heard a loud noise," said Jennifer Jimenez, 18, who works at the Auntie Anne's near where the man landed. "It was really scary."

Jimenez said the man stood on the chair waiting for people to pass on the lower-level for about a minute when somebody on the first floor spotted him and yelled at others to get him off the chair.

"Nobody stopped to do anything," she said.

Kevin Bell, 29, who works at Lids on the first floor, said he called 911 after he saw the man jump and several people rushed to try to help.

"It was horrible," he said.

The man was taken to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he's listed in critical condition, police said.
